Join us for a Artist & Curator Talk! Fong Chung-ray and guest curator Manni Liu will engage in a stimulating dialogue about art, history, and the development of Fong Chung-ray as an artist from the Taiwanese modernist movement in the 1950s and 1960s to today’s global interest in ink painting.
Fong is one of the first Chinese artists to venture into abstract painting, and is a Rockefeller Foundation recipient for his early innovative work. In his eighties, the artist is still painting today. Come learn about Fong’s creative process, his view on the abstract art in Taiwan and the United States. Manni Liu specializes in Chinese art and is very knowledgeable about the history and art process. She holds degrees in Art History and Museum Studies from UCLA and USC.
About the Presenters:
Fong Chung-ray, Artist
Fong Chung-ray is a influential Taiwanese painter, who is known as a pioneer in Chinese abstract painting. Born in Henan, China in 1934, the artist joined the Nationalist Army and went to Taiwan in 1949. There in the 1950s, Fong began his career in art. In Taiwan, he joined an influential group of artists who explored new techniques and was part of a modernist movement that changed the landscape of art and painting in Taiwan and China. Fong has resided in the Bay Area since 1975.
Manni Liu, Guest Curator
Manni Liu has over 20 years experience curating Asian art. A former executive director at the Chinese Culture Foundation, Liu brings a wealth of history and understanding about the Foundation’s direction and vision. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Ecuador, Liu speaks Cantonese, English, and Spanish. She received her B.A. in Art History from the University of California, at Los Angeles and Her M.A. in Art History and Museum Studies from the University of Southern California. Liu has curated at the Chinese Culture Center, the Pacific Heritage Museum, and the Asian Art Museum, among others.
Abby Chen, Moderator
Abby Chen has been on staff with the Chinese Culture Foundation since 2006 and has more than 10 years of experience curating visual arts, film, and performing arts. She heads the Foundation’s artistic vision and planning, including exhibition, public art, collection, publication and strategic partnerships. Under her leadership, the organization’s visual arts programs have expanded in scope and breadth into an open yet focused platform that encourages imagination and risk-taking. She is tri-lingual in Mandarin, Cantonese and English.
