A Special Reading by Poet Yu Xinqiao 俞心樵
Location: CCC Visual Art Center, 750 Kearny St., 3rd Floor, San Francisco
Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco invites you to a special reading by poet Yu Xinqiao俞心樵, an evening celebrating the written word. Yu’s poetry glows with the incendiary fire of political dissent as well as the golden light of an abiding love for language. He was jailed for eight years for advocating for a “Chinese Renaissance Movement” in response to government crackdown on the arts. Fearing censorship, many mainstream Chinese journals have shied away from publishing his work. But Yu’s poetry continues to be tremendously popular amongst regular Chinese readers.
In alignment with our goals of earnest intercultural exchange and shifting dominant narratives, CCC is honored to present an American platform for this subversive, authentic voice from contemporary China. English translation will be read by San Franciso poet, Clara Hsu.
The reading will be held on April 28th at the Chinese Culture Center’s Visual Art Center. We hope you will come and join us in our artistic dialogue — reading, listening, sharing, and feeling our ways towards greater collective understanding.
The critically acclaimed book that has Yu’s poems will be available for purchase on site and the poet will sign them.
