The Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco is deeply saddened and shocked by the horrific loss of 11 people in the shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh.
We offer our sincerest condolences to the families of the victims and pray for the injured who are recovering, along with the friends and community members who have been directly affected by this.
It is not lost on us that these victims were gunned down and killed precisely because they were Jewish. Anti-Semitism has a long history in Western Culture. The alleged perpetrator promoted racial discrimination in social media, which is an affront to anyone who believes in equality and social justice.
We mourn this incredible injustice and reaffirm our commitment as an organization to build bridges and lift up the voices of the underserved through education and contemporary art. We will do our part and encourage others to reach out to friends and colleagues of Jewish background, to engage in conversation about this and act to build stronger and more inclusive communities.
The Chinese and Jewish communities have a long history of shared immigrant struggles and experiences in the United States. This is a time for all of us to unite to show support for inclusion, celebration of our cultures, and to show the best of what this country has to offer when we come together in unity for social justice for all.
