How I Keep Looking Up/Como Sigo Mirando Hacia Arriba/仰望: Community Meet & Greet with the Artists

March 18th, 2023

750 Kearny St., 3rd Floor, SF Chinatown

Saturday, March 18th

1:00PM - 3:00PM

From crisscrossing the Mission and Chinatown neighborhoods to marching in the Chinese New Year Parade, the exhibition “How I Keep Looking Up/Como Sigo Mirando Hacia Arriba/仰望” is the culmination of a year-long, multi-phase public art initiative.

Join lead artist Christine Wong Yap alongside the 16 working-class immigrant women designers in a rare gallery walkthrough and Q&A session. This program will be trilingual: English, Chinese, and Spanish.

Presented by the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco, this program accompanies the “How I Keep Looking Up” project, a trilingual, multi-ethnic community-based public art initiative that engaged 16 working-class immigrant women in creating flags that represent their power and resilience.

Led by artist Christine Wong Yap, the project invited participants to a series of workshops at Chinatown's 41 Ross Alley and the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts where they shared their migration journeys, developed design skills, and created flags alongside one another. The flags were unveiled at the 2023 Chinese New Year Parade, proudly presented by the designers and their families as the first contemporary art project in the Parade’s history.

Masks are recommended but optional.

Light refreshments will be provided during this program.
