Generation Chinatown: A Paid Youth Artist-in-Residence Program for SF High School Students
Presented by the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco, Generation Chinatown was a youth artist-in-residence program based at 41 Ross in Chinatown for high school-age artists. Through this program, a cohort of youth artists developed their own artistic language, built leadership skills, and created art actions that enhanced neighborhood recovery.
Generation Chinatown prioritized the development and growth of QTBIPOC youth artists living in San Francisco while being rooted in the neighborhood. As a site-specific youth program, youth artists were first oriented to the community's resilient histories, cultures, and neighbors. Over the course of the residency, the youth artists created art while being exposed to a series of tours, site visits, and workshops led by arts practitioners in the Bay Area and beyond. Finally, the youth artists led their own community events and a final showcase.
This program aimed to build creative capacity across different generations and invest in the neighborhood's future. Across its outreach efforts, the program engaged a broad network of 44 sites and partners. This included 13 SFUSD schools such as June Jordan, Lowell, and Mission High; 5 private schools and organizations like Sterne School and Lick-Wilmerding High School; and 6 community centers, including Richmond CYC and the Asian Women's Resource Center. In addition, 8 local businesses participated, ranging from neighborhood shops to cultural hubs, and 12 field trips were organized to arts and cultural institutions such as SOMArts, MoMA, and the Wattis Art Institute.
Youth Artists: Fer (Bugg), Dana, Eric, Itzci, MiCAHHH (張海杉), Jennifer, Sophia, Michelle, Lauren, Gabby, Gen, Alexandra, Vicky, Jackie

Program Feedback from Participating Youth Artists
“ I grew up living in Chinatown and I never really thought about the history of Chinatown. But through Generation Chinatown I got to learn about the history of I-Hotel and there, I saw a display of an SRO room that reminded me of family members who also live in an SRO. That is how I got an idea to make my artwork about home.” - Jackie [15’]
“Generation Chinatown taught me how rich this community is with businesses and people!”
Lauren [16]
“Generation Chinatown has given me something invaluable to see how life is as a working artist without the risk and at a young age, to envision how life would be if I was a working artist.”
Micah Z. [17]
“Generation Chinatown has helped me grow as an artist by giving me resources and people to guide me. I started photography maybe last year, through this program I have been able to explore it a lot more.“
Gen [15]
“One of my favorite parts of Generation Chinatown was the community and the friendships built in this program.”
