[SF Examiner] Renovation of Chinatown park inspires artistic look at urban space

San Francisco’s oldest park is about to undergo a major renovation.

The overhaul of Portsmouth Square in Chinatown — which includes a new playground, event space, clubhouse and updated park access — is slated to begin this summer, according to the Recreation and Park Department.

Though a long time coming and welcomed by community advocates, the project will inevitably result in displacement and disruption for the many seniors and single-room occupancy tenants who regularly make use of the recreational outdoor space.
